Project Overview

A paper manufacturing company located in Southeast Asia generated a large amount of industrial wastewater containing fibers, colloidal substances, and organic pollutants during production.

Due to the characteristics of paper mill wastewater, including high suspended solids concentration, fluctuating pollution loads, and difficult-to-settle fine fibers, the customer’s existing wastewater treatment system faced several challenges:

  • High turbidity in treated water
  • Slow sludge settling
  • Unstable flocculation performance
  • High sludge moisture content

To improve wastewater treatment efficiency and reduce sludge handling costs, the customer was looking for a more effective and stable coagulation and flocculation solution.

After water sample testing and application evaluation, KolinSC recommended a combined treatment solution using:

Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) + Polyacrylamide (PAM).


Customer Challenges

The main challenges of paper mill wastewater treatment included:

1. Large Amounts of Fine Fiber Particles

Paper production generates large amounts of fine fibers with surface charges, making natural sedimentation difficult.

2. Fluctuating Wastewater Quality

Different production conditions caused variations in COD and suspended solids levels, requiring flexible treatment chemicals.

3. Difficult Sludge Dewatering

The generated sludge contained high moisture content, increasing transportation and disposal costs.


Our Solution

Based on the wastewater characteristics, KolinSC developed a combined treatment process:

Step 1: PAC Coagulation

Poly Aluminium Chloride was applied to:

  • Neutralize particle charges
  • Destabilize colloidal substances
  • Promote initial floc formation
Step 2: PAM Flocculation Enhancement

A suitable amount of Polyacrylamide was added to:

  • Increase floc size
  • Accelerate sedimentation
  • Improve sludge dewatering performance

The combined process produced stronger and denser flocs for easier separation.
